Sargent also had quite a stylistic change in his later years. This is classified sometimes as “neoclassicism”  but I think it’s Sargent being influenced by Art Nouveau…

Alphonse Mucha
Apotheosis of the Slavs
1925

A little commentary: If don’t know much about Mucha, you probably know only his early commercial stuff - advertisements and show posters for Sarah Bernhardt, etc. (If you click on the Mucha link above, you can view some of his pieces). You may also know that he pretty much invented Art Nouveau, which took off to be the defining style of the early 20th century. What you might not know, is that Mucha struggled to shake his identity as an advertiser, and wanted to create fine art to represent his under-represented culture. For many years right up until the end of his life, he painted what he wanted to be his life’s work, his legacy - The Slav Epic. These paintings are beautiful, with a much more subtle and nuanced use of Art Nouveau’s stylistic elements. I love his “commercial” stuff for one reason, and these for a completely different one. Check out the whole series if you have a chance; it’s pretty magical.
